List of Colleges with Cost Information

Select a state to see college and cost information for that state

or lookup information by college name (or part of the college name)

More Sources

The library is a great source for more information on how to pay for higher education. See each item below for more information about how to utilize your local library to its fullest advantage.

Books and Magazines

Ask for a list of books which various colleges may have prepared and which may be available at the Reference Desk.

Look in the catalogue system under:

  • Scholarships
  • Fellowships
  • Financial Aid
  • Tuition
  • Student Loan Funds

Check out the Readers' Guide to Periodicals for current articles in magazines and newspapers with up-to-date information.

Electronic Research

Many libraries now have electronic search capabilities and/or electronic databases accessible through a computer. Ask your librarian about these resources and how to use them. "Infotrac" is one electronic source for current information from magazines and periodicals.

Uncatalogued Material

Many libraries keep useful current material -- such as pamphlets, magazines and newspaper clippings and other resources which are not formally catalogued. For example, some libraries maintain a vocational opportunities file with useful material about how to pursue different vocational and career opportunities and educational opportunities supporting these tracks.

Be sure to ask the librarian if these resources are available.

College Catalogues

Thousands of college catalogs are available for information about virtually every college in the United States. Some catalogs are also available in electronic versions. Catalogs are very different and some are very specialized. If you are just starting the process of looking for a college, you may want to consider one of these guides:

  • Lovejoy's College Guide
  • Barron's Profiles of American Colleges

Microfilm and Microfiche

Large volumes of information are available in libraries on microfilm and microfiche, often where the same material is not purchased by the library in print form. Be sure to ask about the availability of these resources on colleges and college funding.

Government Documents

Since government support is so crucial to higher education and because education is supported at all levels of government, there is usually information available in the government documents section of many libraries.

One of the most useful books available is "The Student Guide," published by the Federal Student Aid Information Center, P. O. Box 84, Washington, DC 20044-0084, and is available for FREE!

Videos

Some libraries maintain collections of video tapes on colleges. These resources can help you "visualize" the campus life and learn more about their programs in a "travelogue" format. There are also videos available on the subjects of scholarships and financial aid.

Jump to Internet for More Information

The Internet is a good place to look for more information about paying for school and about higher education in general. Many universities maintain World Wide Web pages with information about programs and activities. Some even provide "virtual campus tours."

If you're looking for a university's WWW address, look in its literature for something that looks like ""http://..." and ends with ".edu". In many cases, you can guess the WWW address of a school just by inserting the name of the school in the middle. For instance, Duke University's WWW address is "http://www.duke.edu."

One of the most useful sites on the internet is maintained by the U.S. Department of Education. The address is http://www.ed.gov.
