Financial Tip of the Week by Deloitte & Touche OnLine

November 8, 1999

Don't be afraid to check out charities before giving.

See our archive of previous tips on your money, your taxes and your financial plan.

Chances are you'll be hearing from many charities as the holidays approach. The Better Business Bureau advises caution, as the season and now the Internet provide fertile ground for unscrupulous operators:

  • Watch out for charities with similar names.
  • Do not be pressured to make an immediate gift.
  • Question vague appeals -- charities that give specifics about a problem but not about their plan of action.
  • Do not give personal information to phone solicitors.
  • Don't hesitate to ask the charity for written information.
  • Do not give cash.
  • Keep records of your donation.
  • Not all soliciting organizations are charities. Ask for copies of its tax exempt status.
  • To verify if the charity is registered to solicit, contact your state government.
  • Report questionable practices to your state's attorney general or the BBB.
