Women aren't saving enough for retirement, a study finds.

See our archive of previous tips on your money, your taxes and your financial plan.

Nearly three-quarters of all those aged 65 or older who live below the poverty line are women, according to a study sponsored by TIAA-CREF.

Some of the factors at play:

  • Single women have lower savings rates than single men in most income ranges. Single women who are also heads of households don't save enough for retirement.

  • Women are more conservative investors than men.

  • With life expectancies of 79.4 years, women live longer than men (73.6 years). Women then need to save more, and also have higher medical expenses late in life.

You can see the entire study on the TIAA-CREF web site at http://www.tiaa-cref.org/libra/RDS/RD61/index.html.
