There's a rule in life: If it looks too good to be true, it probably easy. But often it's not too easy to tell the difference between truth and fiction.

Here are some Internet sources on frauds and hoaxes:

  • Federal Consumer Information Center - Scams and Frauds: These are the people in Pueblo, Colo., who provide lots of information from the federal government for consumers. This page is a clearing house for a wide range of frauds. This agency also runs a helpful page on product recalls.

  • Internet Fraud Complaint Center: The FBI maintains this web site to track fraud on the Internet.

  • The National Fraud Information Center This site provide volumes of information about hundreds of frauds and scams. It also has the best set of links anywhere to federal and state government agencies that can assist consumers.

  • CIAC Internet Hoaxes This office in the federal Department of Energy monitors computer viruses, but also does an excellent job determining when end-of-the-world virus emails are hoaxes. Check this Computer Incident Advisory Capability page before you pass along a warning to a friend.
