Learn a person's Social Security number, and you can learn almost anything you want about that person. That's why the Social Security Administration is considering a number of steps to protect numbers from abuse.

Proposals include banning the sale of Social Security numbers, increasing penalties for fraudulent use of someone Social Security numbers, and requiring businesses and government agencies to get permission before exchanging numbers.

The SSA maintains a fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271. If you suspect your Social Security number has been used by someone else, see the agency's fraud page.
