What is "slamming"? How can you check to see whether a travel agent is reputable? Are auto service contracts a good deal?

The 2001 Consumer Action Handbook, published by the Federal Consumer Information Center, provides answers to these questions. More important, it's a handbook for fixing problems with the products and services you buy.

First, the book provides basics guides to spending money on car buying and repairing, investing, utilities, loans, insurance, health care, shopping from home, identity theft, travel and more.

In addition, the guide gives tips on writing complaint letters, and then gives hundreds of addresses for state, local and federal consumer protection agencies, as well as private organizations.
