Rep. Joseph Pitts, R-Pa., and other members of the House GOP Freshman class announced a tax-cutting agenda for 1998 that received warm support from House leaders. "The American people will not let us rest on our laurels. They want more relief from an encroaching federal system," Pitts said at a press conference. The proposals the group are considering include:
"I salute todays effort to keep America moving on the low-tax track ... thats the right track for our future," House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Archer, R-Texas, said at a press conference. "The core principles announced by these members today reflect our deepest American values that strengthen families and communities in their pursuit of happiness through hard work, job creation, education, savings, and investment," said House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga. Tax Reform Debates: House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, and Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-La., plan to hold town meetings across the country to advertise and debate their competing tax reform plans, the two announced at a press conference. Armey long has been a supporter of a flat tax and Tauzin supports a national sales tax similar to the measure offered by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Archer, R-Texas. The meetings will be held in Columbus, Ohio; Atlanta, Ga.; and Chicago, Ill. |
